HEAD LICE TREATMENT & NIT REMOVAL PLAN

When one family member has head lice it is important to check all members of the household and close contacts.  Treat only the infested family members.  Follow the plan below:

1. The recommended first line treatment is a FDA approved, over-the-counter, lice killing product (pediculicide) for humans.  The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the use of a product that contains permethrin.
   
2. Before applying treatment, cover the child’s eyes with a towel or washcloth.  Do not treat in    the shower or bathtub. Instruct the child to lean over the sink and only apply the product to the head area.  This prevents absorption through other skin areas.
3. Apply lice product according to the label instructions.  If your child has extra long or thick   hair, you may need to use a second bottle to assure complete coverage.     
4. Wash the hair according to label instructions. Once applied, allow the lice killing product to continue working by using only regular shampoo for two weeks after treatment because cream rinses and conditioning shampoos coat the hair and protect lice from the lice killing product.    
5. Following treatment, use a fine-toothed metal comb to remove lice and nits from the hair shaft.   Metal lice combs (i.e. Licemiester, etc.) are preferred because they have finer teeth for nit removal, are less likely to break or bend when combing through the hair, and can be boiled or sterilized.  Any remaining nits need to be removed by sliding the nit down the hair shaft with your fingernails.     
6. Recheck the hair daily for lice or new nits laid close to the scalp.  Continue to comb out nits with the fine-toothed metal comb.  Removing all nits will help to prevent a new infestation.    
7. Retreat according to the instructions on the lice-killing product (pediculicide).
8. Continue to check all treated and untreated persons in the same household for 2-3 weeks, even after they appear to be nit and lice free.
   

TRATAMIENTO DE PIOJOS EN LA CABEZA

Cuando un miembro de la familia tiene piojos es importante revisar a todos los miembros de la familia en la casa y contacto cercano. El tratamiento debe ser únicamente para los familiares infestados. Siga el plan siguiente:

1. El tratamiento de primera línea es aprobada por FDA, sin receta, productos mata piojos (pediculicida) para los seres humanos. La Academia estadounidense de Pediatría recomienda el uso de un producto que contenga peregrina.
2. Antes de aplicar el tratamiento, cubra los ojos del niño con una toalla o un trapito. No lo trate en la ducha o bañera. Instruir al niño a inclinarse sobre el lavamanos y sólo aplicar el producto a la zona de la cabeza. Esto impide la absorción a través de otras áreas de la piel.
3. Aplicar producto de piojos conforme a las instrucciones de la etiqueta. Si su hijo tiene el pelo más largo o grueso, puede que necesite utilizar un segundo frasco para asegurar una cobertura completa.
4. Lavarse el cabello conforme a las instrucciones de la etiqueta. Una vez aplicado, permita que el producto mata piojos continúe trabajando usando sólo shampoo regular par dos semanas después del tratamiento ya que aclarados de crema y acondicionador de pelo protegen el pelo del producto mata piojos.
5. Tras tratamiento, utilice un peine metálico de dientes finos para eliminar piojos y liendres de cabello. Peines de metal para piojos (es decir, Licemiester, etc.) son preferidos porque tienen dientes más finos para eliminación de liendres, son menos propensos a romperse o doblarse al peinar el pelo y puede ser hervido o esterilizados. Cualquier liendre  restante debe ser eliminado deslizando el liendre debajo el cabello con sus uñas.
6. Vuelva a revisar el cabello diariamente por piojos o nuevos liendre  cerca al cuero cabelludo. Continuar peinando los liendres con el peine de metal de dientes finos. Quitando todos liendres ayudará a evitar una infestación de nueva.
7. Dele tratamiento conforme a las instrucciones del producto matar piojos (pediculicide).
8. Continúe revisando a todas las personas en la misma casa por 2-3 semanas incluso después de que aparezcan libres de piojos y  libres.
